Comic Book Religion

What kind of self-professed geek would I be if my own forum didn't have a thread to discuss comics, graphic novels, manga, etc.?

Comic Book Religion

Giving this a shot here, if it gets too controversial, I'll move it to HT. Anyway, I found a link via TVTropes that gives lots of comic book characters a probable religion according to their backgrounds and espoused principles. A few of them are pretty obvious (Nightcrawler is as Catholic as they come, what with the whole being a priest in some continuities). Others not so much (I would not have pegged Hal Jordan as Jewish Catholic, as I always figured that o be a contradiction in terms). It also gives us this gem of logic on the Hal Jordan religion page: "One of the most compelling arguments for the theory that Hal Jordan is Jewish is the fact that the character's appearance (and perhaps his personality as well, to some extent) really was based on half-Jewish actor Paul Newman. ... Paul Newman is half-Jewish and so, some people have reasoned, Hal Jordan must be Jewish as well. One strike against this reasoning is the fact that Hal Jordan is not a direct Paul Newman analogue. Jordan may have been drawn to look like Newman, but there are also many differences between the two. For example, Paul Newman has never possessed a power ring given to him from a crashlanded alien, while Hal Jordan has never won an Academy Award." I love this.

This is awesome. However, I'm annoyed to see Zatanna listed as a wiccan. It's always good to see bullshit faux religions gaining ground with comic book characters that are barely a decade younger than the actual "religion" itself supposedly being part of it (I'm speaking of the actual real-world chronology of Zatanna, of course.)

On a more positive note, it's awesome to see so many Jewish super heroes. More proof that God's people are awesome.

Oh, and me being me, I just have to point out that Ben Grimm is a big Jewish guy made of rock because, well, he's a tribute to the golem legend.
